What To Do If Your Roof Starts Leaking

The point of your roofing system is to protect your home from the elements. However, after years of wear and tear, that protection diminishes. One of the first signs of that deterioration comes in the form of roof leaks.

Roof leaks are one of the most common and inconvenient roofing issues that homeowners experience. When it’s not raining, it’s easy to forget that your roof leaks. Ignoring this fact is what usually leads to the worsening of the problem. When you first notice that your roofing system leaks, there are a few steps that you can take. These are some of them:

Move Things Out Of The Way

If the leak is dripping right above your furniture, it’s best to move all your belongings out of the way to prevent them from being damaged by the leaking water. Just because your roof has been damaged does not mean the rest of your property has to be damaged as well.

Contain The Leak

To prevent water from spreading everywhere and creating a slippery surface across your floor, it’s best to place a water bucket just beneath the leak so that you’re able to collect the water and dispose of it once the bucket fills.

Release The Pressure

Sometimes instead of leaking right into the interior of your home, water collects in your ceiling, causing it to bulge quite dramatically. If you leave this bulge for too long, you risk it bursting and water exploding everywhere. To protect your roof and your home, pierce a small hole in your ceiling to relieve the pressure and allow the water to drain out of the ceiling.

Document The Damages

To file an insurance claim for your roof, it’s essential to document the damages. Thoroughly documenting the leak and anything that it might’ve damaged will help verify the issue and the eligibility of your insurance claim.

Call Your Roofing Company

Before the leak gets out of hand, call your roofing company. Your roofer will be able to determine the source of the leak, repair it and repair any other damages that the water and moisture may have caused to your roofing system. If you leave the leak for too long, you may end up having to replace your roofing system.
